Scooter Service : What we do...

Mobility Equipment Servicing, Repairs & Maintenence

At Independent Living Consultants, we can service or repair almost all types of mobility equipment (including riser chairs, profiling beds, wheelchairs & mobility scooters) in our fully equipped workshops. With over 15 years experience in the mobility industry, our fully trained technicians are able to diagnose many common problems (and some not so common!) and endeavour to keep the customer as informed as possible at all times.

Step 1. Collecting & transporting your scooter or powerchair!

In order for us to do the best job possible, we collect all mobility equipment and carry out all servicing and repair work in our specially equipped on-site workshops.

Don’t worry though, we will look after your wheels along the way! We have a fleet of vans (unmarked vans available on request) with ramps and securing points for the safe transportation of your beloved mobility scooter, wheelchair or powerchair to and from our fully equipped workshops just outside Aylesbury and High Wycombe, Bucks.

We will collect the mobility scooter, powerchair or other mobility aid at your convenience (as long as our diaries allow it!) and redeliver it back to you when all the work is done, at no extra cost.

Step 2. Battery Check

Once the mobility scooter or powered wheelchair is inside the workshop we will carry out a full discharge test on the batteries, which gives us a printed read-out of how they are performing. Most mobility scooters and powerchairs will require a new set of batteries every 2-3 years due to general “wear and tear”, however sometimes they can last much longer if looked after properly (regular charging & stored in dry, warm conditions). We have known batteries last 5-7 years and in some cases even longer.

If your batteries do need replacing then we will inform you and get your decision before we carry out any work. We will also let you know the read out of your old batteries to allow you to make an informed decision. Replacement batteries start at £49 fitted, however price vary greatly depending on the make, model and size of scooter.

We will also test the scooter charger for you if required. Please inform us when collecting the scooter and we can take and discharge test it for you.

Step 3. Tyre Pressures

Under-inflated tyres on a mobility scooter can cause all sorts of problems, the main one being drastically decreased range and increased strain on the batteries and motors. This is easily the most common problem we see at Independent Living, and is something that surprisingly people don’t often think about on scooters (unlike cars!). It only takes a couple of minutes for us to put right and can make all the difference to your ride! Many scooters nowadays feature solid puncture proof tyres as standard, however it is always worth checking anyway. We will do a full check on your tyre pressures and top them up to the manufacturers specification if required.

Step 4. Tyre Wear

Most mobility scooters feature pneumatic tyres with inner tubes (much like on a bicycle) and so when these start to wear down, punctures can start occuring regularly. We will check the level of tread on the tyres and inspect for any slow punctures, torn tubes or broken valves.

Step 5. Steering & Suspension

As you can imagine, in the time between services there is a lot of strain put on the steering and suspension systems of any mobility scooter. We will check all parts systematically and oil, lubricate and replace any parts where required.

Step 6. Motor Brushes

One of the most important parts of the service is checking the motor brushes. These are located inside the motor itself and can be replaced if worn down, giving you years more life in your scooter. Many people replace their scooter thinking it is broken when in fact the brushes just need changing, so why not let us take a look for you!

Step 7. Lights, Indicators & Electrics (including potentiometer)

Last but not least, we will test all your lights, indicators & electrics where possible. We will also check the potentiometer (speed controller) is working correctly, as this is a common fault on many scooters.

Step 8. Redelivery

After all the above stages are fully complete (and never before!) we will redeliver the scooter back to you at your convenience (where possible!).
